BFFs In-The-Making – The Paulk Pack

BFFs In-The-Making

It never fails…people got on the topic of dogs and babies, which leads to the question of “What kind of dogs do you have?”

When the words “pit bull” or “German Shepherd” come out of my mouth, would would think that they just saw the Eiffel Tower collapse in front of their eyes. You can see this look of concern as they nod “oh really?” But when it comes down to it, I have four dogs. Yes, they are dogs. A dog is a dog is a dog.

Before Owen arrived, I knew which of our dogs would probably be fine with him and which ones would need a little time to warm up to the idea of a new, tiny human being that makes loud noises and is completely unpredictable. But we were prepared. I’m proud to say that, for the most part, our pooches are all fairly trained. They each have at least basic obedience classes under their belt. Throw in some agility training, Canine Good citizen certifications and some extra party tricks, and I’m a pretty proud dog momma! I’m happy to report that everyone is adjusting nicely.

Chloe, our old lady Great Dane, is terrified of the loud toys and all the new objects around the house but has no problems with Owen. Auggie has learned to get up and leave the room when Owen starts crying…wish I could do that sometimes too! Finnegan is borderline obsessed with where the baby is at all times. Other than the fact that he is learning to be gentle, he has been so wonderful with him. Penny is helping out a lot with bringing dropped toys, etc. back to me. She likes to lick Owen’s hands…which he finds humorous. So yes, those are our dogs. Yes, those are Owen’s BFFs in training. I can’t imagine growing up in a house without a dog, and Owen will never have too. He has some built in play pals ready to go at a moment’s notice.

IMG_8384We did have this tragic event…thanks to Finn and Penny, who are still learning to differentiate between their toys and Owen’s toys. It never fails…when things are quiet around here, someone is doing something bad!
