We had to say goodbye to another one of our alpacas. Codi Silver came down with the same m-worm infection as her partner in crime, Melissa. I thought we had caught it in time this round. We got the meds in her daily and she seemed to be improving after about a week of treatment. Then we had more freezing temps and she went down. We couldn’t get her back up so we kept her as comfortable in the barn with heaters that Charles would go down and run to keep her body temp up. It was sad to see her decline so rapidly after I thought we had made progress. In all actuality, she was a senior girl and I think her body was tired from fighting. We made the call to our vet and he came out while we said our goodbyes.
It’s hard to explain how frustrating it is to want to help an animal so badly, yet you don’t know what to do. We’ve been using our preventatives and we are just fighting a loosing battle it seems.
Here are some pictures of our girl Codi, who is also mother to Midas (born on our farm in 2011).
